Climate indices of temperature and precipitation from station data

On this map, all stations are marked for which climate indices of minimum and maximum temperature and climate indices of precipitation sums are calculated. To see the results, please click on the station symbol or choose a station from the List below.

Places with homogeneous climate data time series

Some climate indices can be used to get the mean state and the changes of the climate at a specific location, if long time series of the climate element of interest for this location exist. Daily measured data of this parameter will be typically used for such studies. It is important, that these data are homogeneous over the whole time period. But many impact factors can cause inhomogeneities in long time series:

  • changes in the measurement equipment: replacement of a device with one of the same or a different type, slow changes on the devices due to drift, changes on the suspension, change of the observer (parallax error)
  • changes in the method: Take readings at a different time, other method for average determination
  • change of the position: move the station to other location, change in instrument position (height)
  • changes in the surroundings: changes on the ground properties, growing or cutting down of plants, changes on buildings, variations of water level

The homogeneity of data can be tested using statistical methods. Differences in trends and outliers detected and can sometimes be corrected.
